I originally started this journal as a chronicle of my time in grad school. But now, it's becoming the chronicle of a mid-30s, newly-minted assistant professor of early English literature and history. I'm highly suspicious of virtually everything to do with the 21st century, and a regular poster of observations regarding same in my blog--and I'm very, very aware of the contradictions inherent in this, thank you.
For me, life is sort of a Dinner Party of the Damned, where we all spend way too much time being polite and trying to feign interest in other people's incredibly boring stories about their last trip to the coast or their orthodontist's hairy hands while waiting for a chance to sneak in some boring stories of our own. Every once in a while, though, you meet someone really worthwhile, and you're grateful to the other person for not being dull or self-obsessed or nuts or mean, and you try like hell not to let the turbulent, somnambulistic babble around you tear you away from one another...Hopefully, some of us will be those people for one another. In the meantime, enjoy my boring oral hygeine stories...
As of October 2004, this is a friends-only journal, a step I had to take because I became aware that people I know and work with were lurking and reading. The boring oral hygeine stories are now off-limits unless you sign up for the friends list.
